what to wear

“What should we wear?” is the question I get asked the most by my clients.  Hopefully, if you are a  client of mine, or want to be, you have gotten a chance to look through my images and get a sense of my style. I am definitely not a ‘Sunday Best’ photographer.  I aim to capture the real you, not the fake you.  No one goes out to dinner with their family wearing matching white collar shirts and demin – ok maybe some people do, but most people don’t.  And please don’t think I am making fun because, believe me, I’ve done it too……I’m sure all of us have a family portrait somewhere of everyone matchy-matchy.  I get it, I totally get it…….you don’t want everyone clashing and you don’t want it to look like just a random picture that was thrown together with out any thought. So here are some thoughts =)

  • don’t be afraid to let your personality show!
  • don’t be afraid of prints! And don’t be afraid to mix prints – say you have 2 siblings, one could wear stripes, the other polka dots and it won’t look crazy, as long as the colors don’t clash and can bring them together.
  • don’t wear white (It doesn’t photograph well….but yellow does!)
  • avoid the temptation to match. You can wear different colors as long as they don’t completely clash you’ll be fine
  • bring accessories and layers:  fun jewelry, hats, beanies, scarves, umbrellas, balloons, jackets, belts, sweaters, and anything else that will make your pictures more personalized!

Guys:
Bring at least 2 other outfit changes – one dressier outfit and a casual one
jeans, a t-shirt, a casual jacket, a short sleeve collared shirt, a long sleeve collared shirt, a tie and a couple pairs of shoes

Gals:
Bring at least 2 other outfit changes – one dressier outfit and a casual one.  And if this is for an engagement session, getting your hair and makeup done is highly recommended so you can look your best and be more confident =)
a fun, bright colored top, jeans, a colorful dress, a belt,  a sweater, a coat, a fitted top and a skirt, colored tights and lots of fun heels and boots

Maternity:
We want to show off your belly so form fitting clothes are best

Kids:
Color, color, color!  And layer, layer, layer!  Bring at least one outfit change, hats, beanies, and more layers =)

Bring their favorite toy and anything else you think would be a good prop (balloons, fresh flowers, books, blankets, skateboards, guitar, etc)

Look at ads from places like Mini Boden, and Nartjie for inspiration.
